Casa bunicilor | Grandpa’s House is a refurbishment, restorement and refunctionalization project of a old traditional house in Geogel in the heart of Transylvania, Romania. The local landscape and wilderness is amazing and has specific, unique characteristics, being a rather natural than built environment. The few houses in the area are isolated, hidden gem’s built from natural materials like wood, hay and stone and are still intact, but very few are still ”alive” and used today. The owner of this house is a young entrepreneur, born here, that wishes to revive the spirit of the place that he felt in love with as a child. The main goal of the project is to refurbish and refunctionalize the old traditional house so that it can acomodate guests for a period of time, so that they can experiment and relive the old ways of the Romanian locals in this area, as life hasn’t changed here very much. All the materials that were used for the refurbishment of the building are local, traditional, Eco-friendly materials, the same ones that our ancestors used to built their homes with. The elements used for the interior of the house are also made from traditional materials, mainly wood, even the bathtubs and sinks. The whole house was refurbished by hand with a direct implication from the owner. This space is so amazing because of the whole experience that comes with living in this area, from the natural way of living, traditional food, amazing landscape, friendly people and horses that run freely trough these fields, all of these elements create a unique, vernacular spirit of place that lives on from ages.
